Abstract

The synthesis of methane in the CO hydrogenation was studied, evaluating the activity of a Fe-rich steel industrial waste: a blast furnace sludge (BFS) subjected to successive leaching stages, The methanation was carried out at 360ºC and 1 bar with a ratio CO:H2=1:20. The catalytic and methane selectivity were evaluated and compared with a FeCuZn/SiO2 catalyst and with a commercial Fe mineral. Prior to catalytic tests, the samples BFS were activated during 2 h using H2 at 500ºC All samples were characterized by XRF, AAS, XRD, BET, TG-MS. The BFS-2 (leached in two steps) showed higher catalytic activities and selectivity to methane (49,5% and 39,2 µ5molCH4/m2·h respectively) compared to the FeCuZn catalyst (36,0% and 1,77 µmolCH4/m2·h). All samples were stable under the studied conditions. With the blast furnace sludge activated and leached in two steps, a Langmuir-Hinshelwood rate low was adjusted in the 320-380ºC temperature range proving that the CO methanation, using BFS-2 as a catalyst, is assisted by hydrogen for the CH4 synthesis.
